Upper Gallery

Visitors having time are recommended to climb to upper gallery where they can enjoy fine mosaics and important signs and inscriptions. The biggest and most important mosaic depicts the Deisis where Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist pray to Christ for the salvation of humankind. This 12 century mosaic fascinates the visitors because of its fine workmanship.

One of the countless gratify put on the walls of Saint Sophia reveals an interesting details. It is a gratify written by Vikings who came down to Contantinople form north through the Russia where they advanced using major rivers. One can recognize easily their linear alphabet.

Two mosaics on the upper gallery have similar subject. Both show the Emperor and Empress offering money and donations to Christ or Mary and Christ. One can easily recognize the money purse and the list of donation held by the members of Royal family.
