SULEYMANYE MOSQUE

Suleymaniye Mosque which crowns the third hill of old city and adds great deal to unrivalled beauty of city's skyline. It was built by architect Sinan during the reign of Suleymn the Magnificent, the greatest of the Ottoman Sultans. Deciding to build a great mosque symbolising his reign, Suleyman ordered to his head  architect, Sinan the Great, to accomplished the work. Starting his deed in 1550, Sinan first chose the site of the mosque, the third hill

of old city and then laid the foundations of his mosque. The construction of the Suleymaniye Mosque took seven years, and the year 1557 inauguration ceremony with prayers took place at the site of new mosque. Suleymaniye Mosque has four minarets and ten balconies. Four minarets symbolise that Suleyman was the fourth Ottoman Sultan after the fall of Contantinople while ten balconies symbolise he was the tenth Sultan form the Ottoman Dynasty.

Suleymaniye suprises visitors with its solid architecture and modest decorations with the exception of magnificent stainglass windows, made by master Ibrahim. Fine 16th century Iznik tiles decorate the mihrap area of the mosque.

The walls, pendentives and dome are decorated Coranic verses, written by the greatest calligraphist of Suleyman's reign. Another unusual features of mosque the great acustic, created by the use of big amphoras on the dome and pendentives.
