THE BLUE MOSQUE
Located in ancient Hippodrome and faced to
Saint Sophia church, the Blue Mosque is one of the majestic monuments of
Istanbul. Built by young and talented architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga during the
reign of Sultan Ahmet I who wanted to fulfil the dream of his childhood.
Becoming Sultan at the age of 14, he first bought the land, owned by Ayse
Sultan, for the construction of his new mosque, then he chose his architect,
Mehmet Aga, who layed down the foundations of the building in 1609 and continued
the work up to the year 1616 when an inauguration ceremony took place.
Ahmet
visited his new mosque and thanked to God for letting him to built such a fine
mosque. but he could not enjoy his mosque, he died a year later because of
unknown cause. This great imperial mosque which overshadows all the other
imperial mosques of the city made his and architects names immortal.
The Bleu Mosque is distinguished from the
other mosques because of its six minarets, splendid interior decorations and its
unrivalled architecture which makes it a classic model for the Ottoman
architecture. One of the unique features of the blue mosque is the great number
of its windows which makes the building one of the best lit monuments of the
world. Fine Turkish tiles decorating the lower portion of the walls and frescoes
with dominating blue colours add another dimension to its beauty.
