Kucuk Ayasofya Church of Sergius and Bachus
Located on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, this small church
was built by Justinian the Great to show his respect and thanks to Saint Sergius
and Bachus, two local saints who had saved his life.
During the reign of emperor
Justin, Justinian was blamed to have a plot against the emperor. While emperor
was making plans for a very severe punishment for the Justinian, two saints,
Sergius and Bachus appeared to Justin in his dream and asked him to forgive his
cousin. So Justinan after he got power, he decided to have a church constructed
for these two saints. Built in 525 AD, The church of Sergius and Bachus is the
oldest church survived in Istanbul. its dome which is divided into 16 section
and the way it undulates makes it one of the most interesting details of the
Byzantine architecture.
