Located at the first courtyard of the Topkapi Palace, this impressive Byzantine church is one of the fascinating monuments of old Istanbul, Built earlier than Saint Sophia, Saint Irene served as main church when Saint Sophia was destroyed during the 5t century riots. These above mentioned who churches had a common courtyard and were considered as one constitution and called Megala Ekklesia "the Great Church". Totally ruined during the Nika Riot of 532, the Church of Saint Irene was rebuilt by Emperor Justinian the Great. After the fall of Costantinople, Saint Irene was never converted into a mosque but served as arsenal for the Ottoman Army. It also served as the Military Museum between 1846 and 1940. Now, it serves as museum and used also or Classical Music Concerts during the Istanbul Art and Music Festival.
