TOPKAPI PALACE

Surrounded by the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and Golden Horn and located
on the first hill of old city, Topkapi Palace, the great residence of Ottoman
Dynasty, is one of the most notable museums of the world. This extensive and
fascinating complex served as Imperial residence for the Ottoman Dynasty
for
more than 4 centuries from 1462 up to 1853 when Sultan Abdulmecit moved into
Dolmabahce Palace, his new residence on the shores of Bosphorus. More or less
abandoned, Topkapi Palace opened its gates as a National Museum in 1924 with
order of Mustafa Kemal, the first president of Turkish Republic. In addition to
its historical and architectural interest, it houses extraordinary collections
of jewellery, textiles, Holly Relics of Muslim faith, Chinese Porcelains,
Calligraphy and precious objects which once belonged to Sultans and their court.
Built as a fortress at the beginning, the palace took its form during the course
of centuries and with the addition of great number of structures, it became a
fascinating complex which is one of the finest examples of the Ottoman civil
architecture in existence.
