Arnavutkoy

Arnavutkoy, the Albanian Village, one of the most charming and picturesque towns of Bosphorus, has great number of old wooden houses of 19th century on the shore. The streets of equally picturesque inner village are lined with very fine wooden houses.

On the hill above the Arnavurtkoy are buildings of Robert College, an American College, first founded in 1871 as the first modern high school for the girls. But in 1971, on the occasion of its centenary, the College for the girls was amalgamated with the high school for the boys.

BEBEK

Bebek Village with its beautiful old and modern residences is one of the most charming villages of Bosphorus. Ferries enter calm and beautiful bay of Bebek, a beautiful inlet on the Bosphorus.

Bebek Mosque

Unfortunately, we have no trace of Humayunabad Palace or the wooden mosque of Sultan Ahmed III once located in Bebek.

The charming mosque, which houses the works of famous calligraphers such as Ismail Hakki and Macits Beys, was built by architect Kemalettin Bey, a leader of Neoclassical architecture.

The University of Bosphorus

The University campus covers an area between Bebek and Rumeli Hisari next village towards the north. Turkish university founded here in 1971 and overtook all the structures of former Robert's college which graduated many figures who became so influencal in the cultural and political life of Turkey.

Yilanli Yali

Yilanli Yali, which was one of the most attractive seaside mansions of Bosphorus was built in the early 18th century. When Sultan Mahmut wanted to possess the buildings, he was prevented from buying it because of the rumors saying that the mansions was full of snakes and it was inhabitable. Demolished by a fire like the other famous mansions of Bosphorous, Yilanli Yali was replaced by the new building which followed exact plans of the old Yali.

Rumeli Hisar

This great fortress which controls the narrows of Bosphorus was built by Mehmet the Conqueror just a year before the fall of Contantinople. Trying to prevent passage of ships at Dardanelles and Bosphorous, Mehmet had immense forts built at the narrows of both straits. Since whole Ottoman army worked for construction fortress, it was completed in amazingly short period of time of four months. Putting heavy cannons, Mehmet's plan was to stop any aid coming to Constantinople. Rumeli Hisar which played such an important role during the siege of Contantinople, it lost its importance after the conquest of the city. It was used as prison and storage place for the upkeep of Imperial Treasury. Many famous figures of Ottoman and European history were imprisoned in the solid towers of Rumeli Hisar.

With the end of Ottoman Dynasty, a small village started growing in the fort and continued to be used up to 20th century when all the wooden houses were demolished. Turned into a museum, Rumeli Hisar now serves as museum and concert hall where Turkish singers give concerts during the summer months.
