The Archaeological Museums

The archaeological finds collected during the Ottoman centuries were first housed the church of Saint Irene 1846. Present day collections are displayed in a new building located between Topkapi Palace and Gulhane Park. The Archaeological Museum houses is one of he fascinating collections in Istanbul.

Great Palace

The Mosaic Museum was establish to house the remnant of the one of the paving of the peristyle courtyards, excavated between the 1935 and 1954. Located in the vicinity of the Blue Mosque, The Mosaic Museum is fascinating place where the visitors would enjoy the floor mosaics of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors. 

 

The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts/ Ibrahim Pasa Palace

This fascinating palace which is located in ancient Hippodrome of Constantinople was built in the 16 the century for Ibrahim Pasa, the grand vizier of Suleyman the Magnificent. The museum collections start with early Islamic ceramics from Samarra where Turks established one of their first settlements after central Asia. Few carvings and tombstones of Seljuk period gives excellent idea about the Art of Seljuks and their history. The reliefs containing human and animal images indicate the great tolerance of Seljuk Turks for images. One of the small rooms contains star shaped tiles from Great Seljuk period. Museum continues with the artefacts dating to early Ottoman Period. Tiles, Korans, textiles decorate the showing cases of the museum. 

 

YERABATAN CISTERN

This immense cistern with 336 ancient columns was built by Justinian the Great in the 6th century. Having capacity of 8000 cubic meters, it was part of the one of the amazing water supply system in the ancient Constantinople.

The Museum of Calligraphy

Located at Bayazit Square, the Museum of Calligraphy has an amazing collection of Korans, Tugras, Imperial orders and Seals, Hilye i Serif ( description of the Mohammed), equipment and apparatus for calligraphic writing, miniatures, holly relics and samples of book binding.

Carpet Museum

Located at the royal box of Sultanahmet mosque, Carpet museum houses a nice collection of historical Turkish carpets.

Caricature Museum

Caricature Museum which was first opened in 1975 at Tepebasi thanks to the efforts of the Caricaturist Association and Municipality of istanbul now enjoys its new location in a beautiful historic building of Gazanferaga Complex at Sarachane district of Istanbul.

The Fire Brigade Museum 

The museum gives the cronogical history of fire fighting in Istanbul starting from beginning. visitors enjoy the water pumps of tulumbasi, the pioneers of the firemen in Turkey.

Tile Museum

Located in the Archaeological Museum Grounds, Tile Museum is situated in a fascinating 15th century Ottoman building. This beautiful building which is richly decorated with tiles was built by architect Atik Ali during the reign of Mehmet the Conquer in 1472.

The Museum of Ancient Orient

This small but attractive museum houses artifacts from both Anatolia and neighboring civilizations. The museum features the artifacts prior to rise of Greek and Roman Civilizations. Nearly 15.000 archaeological pieces from Egypt, Arabic Lands, Mesopotamia, Anatolia prior to birth of Islam are displayed in the main 5 halls of this beautiful museum.

Museum of Reform Period

Located at the Gulhane Park, Tanzimat museum houses documents, artifacts and medallions dating a specific period of Ottoman history when the ruling government tried to limit the sultans powers and institute the western reforms.
