The Miniatures

The collection of Ottoman and Persian miniatures at the Topkapi Palace is said to number more the 13000 pieces of which only a few are exhibited one time. Oldest of these miniatures are collected in three albums known as Fatih albums which were brought to Istanbul form Persian court during Sultan Selim's conquest of these lands and are ascribed to a painter called Mohammed of the Black Pen who depicted the scenes from the hinterland of the Central Asia. The oldest Ottoman miniatures in the collection are by Matrakci Nasuh, Ottoman court painter, who also made miniatures depicting the great campaigns f the Suleyman the Magnificent, especially the Persian campaign which happened in 1534-35. This fascinating collection includes the the works of Levni, the greatest of the Ottoman court painter, who did the miniatures of Surname which was composed to commemorate the great festival concerning the circumcision ceremony of Ahmet III sons.
