Istiklal Avenue

Istiklal Caddesi, which starts from the underground funicular and runs up to Taksim square was the major street of Pera. The importance of this street started in the 16th century with the arrival of European Embassies which built their own palaces, churches, post offices and functioning more or less independently from the Ottoman Authority.
