Fethiye Church or the church of Pammakaristos was built by Byzantine Emperor John Commenos and his wife Maria Doucaine in the 12 century. The church, which was subject to a major reconstruction work in the 13 century, witnessed the addition of a grave chapel in 1310. Following the Conquest of Constantinople, Pammakaristos served as the Patriarcate from 1456 to 1586. Ottoman Sultan Murad III converted the church into a Muslim place of worship and renamed it "Fethiye" the church of conquest to commemorate the great victories of the Ottoman army in Georgia and Azerbaijan. The church which was beautifully restored by the Institute of Byzantine Studies in 1960 is another fine example of the last golden age of Byzantine empire.
