Land walls which were built by the Anthemius, the prefect of the
Eastern Empire during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II (408-450) were
destroyed in 447 by a strong earthquake that ruined nearly 57 towers and part of
the walls just before the attack of Attila and his hordes. New Prefect of the
city, Constantine, managed to repair the walls in very short time and added a
moat and outer defense walls which helped to stop Attila the Hun who turned his
armies towards west after the failure.
Theodosius walls which consist of a moat and three successive walls with 6.5 kilometers length protected the city nearly 1000 years from the attacks of Arabs, Russians, Turks and many other tribes and nations. The walls was one of the major matters protecting the city which held nearly 2/3 of al the richness of the Orient.

Land Walls
In 1985 Istanbul was included in the world Heritage List and a project to
restore the city walls and gates was launched by the Istanbul Municipality.
