The Archaeological Museums

The archaeological finds collected during the Ottoman centuries were first housed the church of Saint Irene 1846. Present day collections are displayed in a new building located between Topkapi Palace and Gulhane Park. The Archaeological Museum houses is one of he fascinating collections in Istanbul. The impressive museum building in classical style was built by two famous architects of the period: Alexander Vallaury and Raimondo Aronco in 1891. The archaeological finds and objects which had been formerly displayed in the church of Saint Irene and the Tiled Mansion during the former years were transferred to this new building and re arranged by the Osman Hamdi bey, new director of the museum, famous archaeologist and scholar of the century.

Museums most famous collections is 21 sarcophagus discovered in at the Royal Cemetery at Sayda in 1887 and 1888. Excavated by Osman Hamdi Bey, the Royal Cemetery had a group of tombs with amazing quality which led the scholars to the idea that one of theses sarcophagus could be the tomb of Alexander the Great.The museum with it new additions houses three separate museums in its grounds

Alexander's tomb

This fascinating collection accumulated during the Ottoman centuries is displayed in sumptuous way in this 19th century building. Museum's most reputable collection is certainly group of sarcophaguses discovered n Lebanon during the rescues excavations done by Osman Hamdi Bey, notable Turkish archaeologist.

One of the pieces found in this Royal cemetery and known as the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great is real masterpiece of ancient sculpture. This piece showing Alexander with Persians on its two faces was erroneously accepted as the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great. Outstanding work of this piece show us the piece was carved by one of the talented sculptors of the antiquity. one can still see original paint of the tomb.

The sarcophagus of the mourning women

This interesting tomb which faces to to Alexander's tomb is known as the tomb of mourning women. Carved in the shape of Ionic temple and filled with the female figures situated among the Ionic columns, this pieces attract our attention. Dated to 5th century, the sarcophagus has a funeral scene on its lid and amazons' hunt on the lower freeze.

The tomb of the Satrap

this oldest piece form the Royal cemetery depicts the scenes concerning a Persian Governor or Satrap who gives orders for the preparation his horses for hunting. One can see the Persian Governor on the other side hunting a wild boar. As to narrow faces of the sarcophagus, there is funeral banquet.

Lycian Tomb

This fine sarcophagus which dates from 4 century has similar scenes decorating two long sides. On this sarcophagus, sculptors tried to create depth of field by putting the horses and figures one behind other.

In the following halls, visitors admire the famous head of Alexander the Great, the agony of Marsyas, the statue of the young athlete relaxing, the Head of poet Sapho, fine sculpture from Aprodisias, Goddess of Good Luck.
